I remember my first ever Om (pronounced AUM) like it was yesterday. Yet it was actually 10 years ago.
I had no idea what was happening, I felt uncomfortable, I remember giggling to myself and was totally confused at the whole point of it.
Do you know why we Om?
I am here to clear any confusion, so you can understand the purpose behind this powerful sound.
Ok let’s break this down….
Everything that exists in the universe, on earth and in nature is vibrating at frequency. When Om is chanted, the vibration matches that of everything in nature.
As Om is the basic sound of the universe; chanting it will allow us to physically attune to that vibration.
This can make us ‘feel connected’ with the other students in the room, all other living beings, everything in nature and the universe as a whole.
1. The vibrations slow down the nervous system and can create meditative effects in the mind
2. It is great for your heart. It helps us feel lovingly connected to others and nature. Additionally, the calming effects on our mind cause our blood pressure to drop too, which improves the health of our heart
3. It connects us to our practice in a deeper way. We are acknowledging the time we have set aside in our day to connect and give ourselves space. Then we acknowledge the closing of the practise in the same way.
If you don’t yet feel comfortable to Om in class, please know that is totally fine! You will still receive all the wonderful physical benefits by sitting with the frequency, allowing the vibrations to be felt around you and move through you.
